Across North Carolina, homeownership is growing increasingly out of reach for the core service workers who sustain our communities. Statewide the average home price increased from $141,000 in 1999 to $193,000 in 2005, causing civic leaders to be concerned about a crisis in "workforce housing." Even homes that were originally developed as "affordable housing," and subsidized with public funds, have in many cases appreciated beyond the reach of low and moderate income buyers.

Community Land Trusts create permanently affordable homes for low and moderate income buyers. Land Trust homeowners include school teachers, hospital workers, town employees, and working families who have been priced out of private market homeownership. Learn how some North Carolina communities are using Community Land Trusts to ensure that core service workers will have housing for generations.

Hosted by:

Durham Community Land Trustees: Created in 1987, the DCLT is a community-based nonprofit organization committed to providing permanently affordable housing for low to moderate-income people and promoting community revitalization in the Southwest Central neighborhoods of Durham.

OCHLT both develops and markets housing, and since inception it has created 125 land trust homes in a rapidly escalating real estate market.
